Dr. Charith Galappaththy is an experienced vascular surgeon in Cairns providing comprehensive care for patients with arterial and venous conditions, including complex vascular disease. He offers both minimally invasive endovascular procedures and traditional open vascular surgery, allowing treatment to be tailored to each patient’s needs.
As a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, Dr Galappaththy has been practising as a Consultant Vascular Surgeon since 2022 and currently serves at Cairns Public Hospital. He treats a wide range of vascular conditions and provides non‑operative management, endovascular surgery, and open vascular surgery, ensuring patients have access to the full spectrum of modern vascular care.
Dr. Galappaththy completed his medical degree (MBBS) in 2009 and undertook extensive specialist training, including an MD in Surgery with subspecialist training in Vascular, Endovascular, and Transplant Surgery. He previously held academic and clinical appointments at the Teaching Hospital, University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka, where he was involved in patient care, research, and medical education.
Between 2018 and 2020, Dr. Galappaththy completed a Fellowship in Endovascular Surgery at Townsville University Hospital, further developing his expertise in minimally invasive vascular procedures. He subsequently worked there as a Consultant Vascular Surgeon in Townsville before relocating to Cairns.
In addition to clinical practice, Dr. Galappaththy remains actively involved in vascular surgery research, with publications and presentations at national and international meetings. He is committed to medical education and contributes to undergraduate teaching at James Cook University, as well as the training and mentorship of future vascular surgeons.
Dr. Galappaththy consults patients in his private rooms in Cairns, where he also performs day procedures, including sclerotherapy and microsclerotherapy for varicose veins and venous disease. He performs both open and endovascular vascular surgery at Cairns Private Hospital, providing high‑quality local care for patients across Far North Queensland.
